All the exhibited artists are affiliated with Galeria Olympia.
The gallery opened its doors in 1999 and puts effort in supporting and introducing young Polish artists, each with their own recognizable identity, to the art world. This focus has helped raise the interest of Western art lovers, collectors, critics and curators; Polish artists are no longer operating at the fringe of international art, but are part of it.
The gallery received great international recognition in 2000, the year Krakow was the cultural capital of Europe.
POLAND 1989 - 2009
On November 9th 1989 ‘the Berlin Wall’ fell. At that moment, the Democratic Republic of Poland was already a fact; the outcome (October 28th 1989) from the first democratic parliament elections of Poland (June 4th 1989) brought an end to the communist era.
The fall of the wall also had a major impact on art: art was no longer themed by the struggle for freedom, but instead used new, previously untouched, themes such as grief, sickness, death, invalidity, sex, homophobia and social exclusion. This movement of the early 90’s would become known as ‘body art’ or ‘critical art’ and would eventually lead to censorship by the Polish government.
Through the work of 7 artists and an art collective, all of whom are affiliated with Krakow's Galeria Olympia, the exhibition shows the influence of recently obtained freedom of expression.
